Description

A bushy perennial plant growing up to 60cm high with a hairy stem, dark green oval leaves and small whitish flowers in clusters. The whole plant is highly aromatic.

Characteristics

A warm, woody, spicy-camphoraceous odour.

Method of extraction

Steam distillation.

General

Popular with a common medicinal plant amongst the ancient Greeks – the Greek word means ‘joy of the mountains’. It is a useful herb which has been widely used for soothing, fortifying and warming effects.

Blends well with

Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cypress, Lavender, Mandarin, Orange, Rosemary, Rosewood and Ylang Ylang.

Indications

Mind & Spirit –Calming effect on the nervous system, relieves anxiety and stress. Effective for insomnia especially where there is high blood pressure. Used for grief due to the warming and comforting effect on the heart. Referred to as an aphrodisiac – diminishing the desire for sexual contact.

Body – Warning and analgesic for muscular spasm, rheumatic pain, strains and sprains. Inhale for respiratory problems. Eases cramps and useful in treating scanty or painful periods.

Skin & Hair – Warming properties make it useful for treating chilblains and also helps to disperse bruises.
